Cold Water vs Warm Water Dive Gear

Below 60°F, everything changes. Here's what gear you need and why.

Diving in cold water demands different gear and different preparation than tropical reef diving. Water below 60°F strips body heat fast, numbs extremities, and increases air consumption because your body works harder to stay warm. The right gear configuration for cold water keeps you comfortable, safe, and able to enjoy the dive instead of counting the minutes until it's over.

Exposure Protection: The Core Decision

In water between 50–60°F, a thick wetsuit (7mm with hood, gloves, and boots) works for most recreational divers on dives under 45 minutes. Below 50°F, or for longer dives in any cold water, a drysuit is the standard. Drysuits use a layer of air (or argon gas) between you and the water for insulation, and you wear thermal undergarments beneath the suit. The combination keeps you warm for extended periods in water that would be unbearable in neoprene.

Cold-Water Regulators

Cold water can cause regulator free-flow — a continuous release of air from the second stage caused by internal icing. This happens when moisture in the breathing air freezes on the valve mechanism, forcing it open. Environmentally sealed diaphragm first stages (like the Apeks XTX50 or Scubapro MK19 EVO) resist this by keeping water away from the internal mechanism.

The rule: if you're diving below 50°F, use a cold-water-rated regulator with an environmentally sealed first stage. An unbalanced, non-sealed regulator in cold water is a free-flow waiting to happen.

Warm-Water Gear: What Changes

Tropical diving (75°F+) simplifies the equipment list. A 3mm wetsuit or even a rash guard provides adequate protection. Standard piston first stage regulators (Cressi, Aqua Lung entry models) perform perfectly in warm water. Lighter BCDs work because you need fewer weights without a thick suit.

The primary concern in warm water shifts from thermal protection to sun protection. A UPF-rated rash guard, reef-safe sunscreen on exposed skin, and hydration between dives become the priorities.

Start warm, graduate cold. If you're certified in warm water and want to try cold-water diving, take a drysuit specialty course. Buoyancy control in a drysuit is fundamentally different from a wetsuit — the air layer in the suit adds a second buoyancy device you must manage alongside your BCD.
