Dive computers come in two form factors: wrist-mounted units you wear like a watch, and console-mounted units that connect to your regulator's first stage via a high-pressure hose. Each has practical advantages that suit different diving styles.

Wrist Computers

Wrist dive computers are the dominant form factor in modern diving. They're worn on the wrist (or attached to a bungee mount on the forearm) and operate independently from your regulator setup. You can check your data with a glance at your arm — no reaching for a dangling console.

Many wrist computers double as daily watches (Garmin Descent, Suunto D5) with smart features, fitness tracking, and GPS. This dual-use means you're more likely to wear it every day, which keeps the battery charged and the interface familiar.

Wrist computers cannot directly measure tank pressure without a wireless transmitter (an additional purchase). Some divers use a separate SPG (submersible pressure gauge) on a short hose to track air independently from their computer.

Console Computers

Console dive computers mount in an instrument cluster attached to a high-pressure hose from your first stage. They sit alongside (or replace) your analog SPG. The primary advantage: built-in air integration without a wireless transmitter. The console reads tank pressure directly from the hose, providing gas time remaining (GTR) calculations without an additional purchase.

Console computers tend to have larger screens than wrist units because there's no size constraint. This makes them easier to read, especially for divers with vision concerns.

The downsides: consoles dangle when not in hand, which creates drag and entanglement risk in overhead environments. You must reach down and grab the console to check your data, which is less convenient than a wrist glance. And you can't wear a console as a daily watch.
